Honoring the Legacy of
Arthur & Polly Mays
Champions of Education in the Goulds Community
Arthur and Polly Mays were pioneers of educational opportunity in South Dade. Despite their humble beginnings — Arthur with just six weeks of schooling and Polly having only a 4th grade education — the couple became lifelong learners and tireless advocates for Black children’s education during segregation.
In a time when no schools existed for Black children in their area, Arthur and Polly established the first classrooms in their church. Recognizing the dire need for educational access, they donated land for the construction of Goulds Junior-Senior High School, later named Arthur and Polly Mays Junior-Senior High School in their honor.
Their acts of service were endless:
⦁ Donating land for school buildings.
⦁ Providing transportation — purchasing buses and even driving them themselves when needed.
⦁ Supplying food and books for students using produce from their farm and resources from the community.
⦁ Advocating for better facilities and opportunities through leadership roles like Arthur’s presidency of the Dade County Negro PTA.
Their sacrifices and vision ensured that generations of children in the community could access an education, breaking barriers and creating pathways for future leaders.
Today, Mays Middle School stands on land donated by the couple — a lasting reminder of their unshakeable belief in the power of education and community.
